Drama in PDP Headquarters as Samuel Anyanwu resumes as National Secretary despite sack

The embattled National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Samuel Anyanwu, resumed office at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja on Monday, despite a leadership tussle with Ude Okoye, who also lays claim to the position.

Upon entering his office, Anyanwu performed a symbolic act by sprinkling anointing oil on his seat before taking his place. While fears of a possible clash loomed, only a minimal police presence was observed at the PDP headquarters.

Addressing his supporters, Anyanwu emphasized that the Appeal Court’s ruling recognizing Okoye as the National Secretary has been appealed, with a stay of execution in place. He called for prayers and began an inspection of the offices at the Secretariat.

The leadership dispute stems from Anyanwu’s participation in the Imo State governorship election, which he lost to the incumbent Governor Hope Uzodinma. During his absence, Okoye assumed the position of National Secretary, later challenging Anyanwu’s right to reclaim the role.

Last week, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, acknowledged Okoye as the legally recognized National Secretary, citing the court ruling. However, Anyanwu dismissed Ologunagba’s statement as a personal opinion, stating that the matter is now before the Supreme Court.

Supporters of Anyanwu staged a solidarity protest at the entrance of the PDP Secretariat, chanting slogans in his favor and reaffirming his claim to the office.

This ongoing crisis highlights deepening divisions within the PDP, as the party grapples with internal conflicts ahead of crucial political engagements.
