Edo Governorship election kicks Off: Voters to decide obaseki’s successor (LIVE MONITOR)

Today marks a pivotal moment for Edo State as voters head to the polls to elect a new governor, who will succeed Governor Godwin Obaseki.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), out of the 2.6 million registered voters, 2.249 million have collected their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) and are eligible to vote.

Voter Distribution

Edo State has 2,629,025 registered voters, spread across the following regions:
– Edo South: 1,526,699 voters
– Edo North: 673,794 voters
– Edo Central: 440,514 voters

These voters will cast their ballots across 18 local government areas, 192 wards, and 4,519 polling units.

The Candidates

The race for the governorship features 18 candidates, including one woman. However, the spotlight is on three major contenders:
– Dr. Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
– Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC)
– Mr. Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP)

These candidates are battling to take the helm of the state from November 12, 2024, and lead until 2028.

A Three-Horse Race

While there are multiple candidates, the election is shaping up as a three-way contest between PDP’s Ighodalo, APC’s Okpebholo, both hailing from Edo Central, and LP’s Akpata from Edo South.
