Edo Guber: Ighodalo rejects Appeal Court verdict, heads to Supreme Court

Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the disputed 2024 Edo governorship election, has vowed to challenge the recent verdict of the Court of Appeal by taking his case to the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, May 29, 2025, Ighodalo expressed deep disappointment over the Court of Appeal’s judgment, which upheld the outcome of the September 21, 2024 election, but reaffirmed his commitment to pursuing justice.
Ighodalo described the Court of Appeal ruling as one that, like the Tribunal’s earlier verdict, failed to address the serious concerns of electoral malpractices and violations of the Electoral Act.
He warned that the decision, rather than strengthening democracy, risks normalising electoral impunity and undermining public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.
He reiterated that his contest has never been driven by personal ambition, but by a genuine resolve to protect the people’s right to choose their leaders through a transparent and credible process.
According to him, the September 2024 election was marred by irregularities and the decision of both the Tribunal and Appeal Court ignored the will of the people.
Asue Ighodalo disclosed that he has instructed his legal team to file an appeal at the Supreme Court, describing the apex court as the final guardian of justice and democratic principles in Nigeria.
He urged the judiciary to defend not just the letter of the law but its true spirit, one that safeguards democracy, public trust, and the rights of citizens.
While calling on his supporters to remain peaceful, vigilant, and steadfast, he assured them that the legal battle was far from over and that this next phase is a continuation of their collective struggle for justice, equity, and a better Edo State.
“We remain resolute. We remain committed. We remain undaunted. And we shall not rest until the voices of our people are heard and their stolen mandate restored,” Ighodalo declared.
He concluded by reaffirming his belief in the rule of law and democracy, urging the people of Edo State and Nigerians at large to maintain hope and faith in the judicial process.
