Ex-Super Eagles goalkeeper dies in US

Moses Effiong, a former goalkeeper and assistant coach of Akwa United Football Club, has passed away in the United States after a prolonged illness.

The news of his death was confirmed on Sunday, just three months after he marked his 65th birthday with hopes of overcoming his health challenges.

Paul Bassey, Chairman of Akwa United, announced the sad development in a statement issued by the club’s Media Director, Mfon Patrick. Bassey described Effiong as a consummate professional, a devoted family man, and a committed coach who gave his best to every assignment.

Effiong, who once played for the Nigerian national team, was transferred abroad for medical care in an effort to improve his health. His passing has left the Nigerian football community mourning the loss of an iconic figure known for his dedication and love for the game.

According to the statement, “The Management, staff and players of Akwa United Football Club regret to announce the sudden demise of our goalkeeper coach and a member of Nigeria 1980 Africa Cup of Nations Winner coach Effiong Moses (MON) who passed away early on Sunday 26 January, 2025 in the United States of America after a long battle with illness.
