In a devastating incident early Thursday morning, seven Nigerian soldiers lost their lives when their vehicle hit an explosive device in the Mugunu area of Maiduguri, Borno State.

The vehicle was part of a convoy dispatched to respond to a Boko Haram attack on a neighboring community along the Gamboru Ngala-Maiduguri Road.

Reports from SaharaReporters detail that the army received an urgent distress call about the attack, prompting the commandant to send out three vehicles filled with armed soldiers for a rescue mission.

Tragically, one of the vehicles struck an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), suspected to have been planted by Boko Haram, resulting in the deaths of all but one soldier on board.

Distressing footage has emerged, showing soldiers struggling with the harrowing task of recovering and reassembling the dismembered remains of their fallen comrades.

A military source recounted the sequence of events, stating, “They were called that a neighboring community was under attack by Boko Haram. The commandant ordered a response around 5 am in a convoy. The first two vehicles passed, but the third vehicle hit the IED, causing the fatal explosion.”

Efforts are ongoing to collect and identify the remains of the deceased soldiers, with families yet to be notified of the tragic loss. As of now, the identities of the fallen soldiers have not been fully disclosed.

This incident highlights the relentless and dangerous efforts of the Nigerian Army in combating the ongoing threat posed by Boko Haram in the region.
