FG plots recruitment of 74,000 teachers
The Federal Government is considering a plan to recruit 2,000 teachers annually in each of Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, which would result in the employment of 74,000 teachers.
This initiative, aimed at addressing the nationwide shortage of educators, is expected to be implemented by December 2024.
According to the Ministry of Education’s roadmap, the states will be required to recruit qualified teachers certified by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).
This move comes after reports revealed that 18 states have not recruited any teachers in the past five years, exacerbating the crisis in public schools.
The ministry has outlined that state governors will be involved in the recruitment process, as the government strives to combat the teacher shortage and improve the quality of education across the country.
