FG to splash N8b for public enlightenment on payment of electricity bill in 2025 -Minister
The Federal Ministry of Power has proposed a budget of N8 billion for a nationwide orientation campaign to encourage Nigerians to pay electricity bills promptly in 2025.
Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, revealed the plan on Monday while defending the ministry’s budget before the National Assembly’s joint committee on power.
He stated that the advocacy would utilize social, digital, and print media to reach Nigeria’s over 200 million citizens.
“We need to go through all the loopholes—social media, digital media, and print media—to carry out this advocacy. So, we have N8 billion allocated for this purpose,” the minister explained.
Rationale Behind the Campaign
Adelabu highlighted the need for widespread education on the importance of viewing the power sector as a shared national asset that requires protection and responsible usage.
He also stressed the necessity of combating power theft and fostering a culture of prompt bill payments.
“Our people need to be re-educated and re-oriented to understand that power assets are national assets, and we must collectively protect them,” he stated.
He further added, “Citizens must know that power theft undermines the sector and that paying electricity bills on time is crucial. When people see something wrong, they must speak up. This advocacy is aimed at re-educating Nigerians on these vital issues.”
The proposed initiative is part of the federal government’s broader effort to improve revenue collection and reduce inefficiencies in the power sector.
