In a tense quarterfinal at the 2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Bogota, Colombia, Japan secured a 2-1 victory over Nigeria, earning a spot in the semifinals.

The match, played at Estadio Metropolitano de Techo, saw Japan dominate with precise passing and solid defense.

Miyu Matsunaga opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, giving Japan a halftime lead. Despite Nigeria’s efforts, Japan extended their lead in the 65th minute through Maya Hijikata.

Olushola Shobowale scored a late consolation goal for Nigeria in the 91st minute, but Japan held firm to advance.
