Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has approved a minimum wage of N77,000 for the state’s lowest-paid workers, with immediate effect starting in October.

This decision follows a meeting between the state government, led by Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Tokunbo Talabi, and the leadership of Organized Labour, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC).

Talabi explained that the meeting was prompted by Governor Abiodun’s directive to ensure that no worker in the state earns less than N77,000, a figure that currently stands as the highest minimum wage in Nigeria.

Abiodun also urged private sector employers to adopt similar wage structures to improve the living standards of their workers in light of the country’s economic challenges.

NLC Chairman in Ogun State, Comrade Hameed Benco, expressed satisfaction with the Governor’s decision, noting that it surpasses the minimum wages set by other states. Comrades Akeem Lasisi of the TUC and Isa Olude of the JNC also praised the government’s worker-friendly policies.

Ogun State’s Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, added that this move highlights the government’s responsiveness to the needs of workers and will likely enhance their commitment to executing state policies. Further announcements on pension adjustments and other matters will follow after consultations.
