Gov Fubara directs audit of LG accounts amid political tension

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has directed the state auditor general to audit the accounts of the 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) for the last three years.

This directive comes in the midst of an ongoing political crisis in the state.

The governor made this announcement during the swearing-in ceremony of the Caretaker Committee Chairmen for the LGAs. He stated that the audit is intended to serve as a check for the incoming officials, ensuring accountability and transparency.

Governor Fubara urged the newly appointed caretaker chairmen to prioritize the interests of their constituents and to demonstrate that the government’s choice in appointing them was justified. He emphasized that these actions are a manifestation of democratic principles.

Addressing the broader implications of the political situation, Fubara explained that the fight against tenure extension in Rivers State is part of a larger national issue. He cautioned that allowing tenure extensions in one state could set a precedent for others across the country.

Fubara noted that the use of caretaker committees is not unique to Rivers State, as many states in Nigeria also operate under similar arrangements. However, he assured that the tenure of these caretaker committees would be short-lived, with preparations for local government elections set to begin soon.

The governor also stressed the importance of avoiding violence and urged the caretaker officials to address the salaries and entitlements of the outgoing chairmen.
