The Rivers State Government will swear in the 23 chairmen declared winners of the Local Government Council elections held on Saturday.

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) announced that the Action Peoples Party (APP) claimed victory in all 23 local government areas.

In a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Wenike Danagogo, it was confirmed that the newly elected chairmen will be sworn in today, Sunday, October 6, 2024, by Governor Siminalayi Fubara at the Government House in Port Harcourt at 4 pm.

The event is expected to be attended by the elected chairmen and a guest each.

Background:

The elections, held on Saturday, were marred by gunshots, bomb explosions, and protests in some parts of the state.

The lack of police presence at polling areas contributed to rising tensions.

A Federal High Court in Abuja had restrained security agencies, including the police, from providing security during the polls.

This legal decision sparked conflict between supporters of Governor Fubara and those of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, adding to the already tense political atmosphere.

Despite the unrest, RSIEC successfully supplied materials for the election, which saw a substantial voter turnout in many areas.

However, the absence of law enforcement raised security concerns throughout the process.

Wike’s supporters protested against the election in Port Harcourt, raising further doubts about the legitimacy and security of the electoral process.
