Guinness World records confirms Fola David’s record for largest drawing
Nigerian doctor and artist Fola David-Tolaram has made history by setting a Guinness World Record for creating the world’s largest drawing by an individual.
His masterpiece, which spans 1,004.7 m² (10,814.5 ft²), was showcased on the pitch at Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, and celebrates the diverse cultures of Nigeria.
David-Tolaram, 31, described the artwork, titled The Unity of Diversity, as “a map of Nigeria showing the various cultures.”
He shared that the artwork was inspired by his travels across the country to immerse himself in the distinct cultural elements of each region.
To bring his vision to life, David-Tolaram worked with a 1,360 m² canvas and waterproof markers, dedicating two days to assembling the large-scale piece.
While he initially planned to work outward in a circular motion, he adapted his approach as the project progressed.
The six-day endeavor, which attracted a crowd of enthusiastic spectators, culminated in an electrifying atmosphere at the 5,000-seat stadium.
David-Tolaram’s achievement not only marks a personal milestone but also highlights Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity.
Reflecting on the experience, he shared, “I remember standing right in the center of this canvas, about to start this drawing, and feeling a lot of apprehension and fear… But once I got going, I knew I could do it.”
David-Tolaram described the significance of achieving a Guinness World Records title as “absolutely unbelievable,” noting, “I grew up reading about world records and I never thought that I would be a record title holder. I feel very honored, I feel distinguished, and I feel Officially Amazing.”
