A young man was killed by unknown gunmen in Orji, Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State on Tuesday.

This incident followed a violent attack just a day earlier in Irete, Owerri West LGA, where four police officers and a point-of-sale operator were killed.

The gunmen, who fired sporadically into the air, targeted a vehicle belonging to the Imo State Government Waste Management Agency at Nkwo Orji Market and set it ablaze.

Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen issued threats to traders and market-goers, warning them to stay home during the sit-at-home or risk their lives, causing widespread panic and an exodus from the area.

In response, Police Public Relations Officer Henry Okoye assured the public that police operatives had been deployed to Orji to manage the situation.

“The situation is under control. The miscreants responsible for the attacks will certainly be brought to book,” Okoye stated.
