How gallant Navy Commander Gideon Gwaza died after saving 59 people from sinking vessel

The Prayer and Support for the Nigerian Armed Forces and other Security Agencies (PSNASA) has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Nigerian Navy officer, Lieutenant Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza, who sacrificed his life to save 59 people on a sinking vessel.

Lt Commander Gwaza’s selfless bravery is being celebrated as a testament to the dedication of naval personnel and security agents who risk their lives to protect others.

During a challenging rescue mission, Gwaza led a team to save the passengers of the MV AMBIKA 4, a dredging vessel that was on the brink of sinking at Okpobo field in the Niger Delta.

Despite the treacherous conditions, Gwaza ensured the safety of all 59 people on board, ultimately losing his own life in the process.

In a statement issued by its Convener, Ambassador Mary Abayomi Fatile, the Prayer and Support for the Nigerian Armed Forces and other Security Agencies (PSNASA) made a heartfelt appeal to Nigerians to come together and show appreciation for the selfless sacrifices of security agents like the late Lt. Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza.

Ambassador Fatile emphasised the need for collective support and recognition of the bravery and dedication of security personnel who put the needs of others before their own, often at great personal cost.

The statement continued: “PSNASA commiserates with the Nigerian Navy over the loss of one of its gallant officers, Lt. Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza,who paid the ultimate sacrifice while rescuing a vessel in distress, recently.

“He selflessly risked his life to save 59 people on board MV AMBIKA 4, a dredging vessel that was in danger of sinking at Okpobo field. Despite the treacherous conditions, he courageously led the rescue operation, ensuring the safety of all on board.

“Tragically, he lost his life in the process, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and selflessness. PSNASA sees Gwaza’s sacrifice as a testament to the unwavering dedication and commitment of naval personnel, as well as other security agents, including military personnel, police officers, and emergency responders, who risk their lives every day to protect us from harm. Unfortunately, some of these brave individuals make the ultimate sacrifice, losing their lives in the line of duty.

“PSNASA therefore calls on Nigerians to come together as a society to support and appreciate the sacrifices of these heroes. It is our responsibility to recognize and appreciate the sacrifices of these heroes, who selflessly put the needs of others before their own.
“Together, we can make a difference and show our security agents that we care. PSNASA also extends heartfelt condolences to the family of Late Lt. Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza.”
