How I transitioned from Tinubu’s critic to supporter – Reno Omokri

Prominent Nigerian commentator and author Reno Omokri has clarified his evolving stance on President Bola Tinubu, attributing his shift from criticism to support to new evidence and a strong personal connection.
Speaking on Breakfast Central on Thursday, Omokri noted that Nigerians often have a short memory regarding political events. He explained that his initial opposition to Tinubu was based on concerns about the President’s academic qualifications and alleged links to drug-related activities.
However, after personally investigating Tinubu’s academic records at Chicago State University in September 2022, Omokri stated that he found “inconsiderable evidence” proving Tinubu’s attendance, exam success, and graduation. Following this discovery, he publicly retracted his previous claims and urged others to stop spreading what he now considers “lies.”
While he continued to criticize Tinubu over drug-related allegations, the Supreme Court’s ruling exonerating Tinubu of any conviction led him to reconsider his position. Omokri explained, “The court ruled that there was no drug conviction against him but rather someone he had financial dealings with. At that point, I had to be consistent with my principles.”
Omokri also revealed that his decision to support the Tinubu administration was influenced by his close friendship with Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser. Having known Ribadu since his exile under the Yaradua administration, Omokri stated that Ribadu convinced him of the government’s genuine intentions.
“After he convinced me, I made a video in his office declaring my support for this administration, particularly its economic policies,” Omokri said.
Concluding his remarks, Omokri further revealed that his shift was based on verifiable evidence and personal conviction, not political gain, adding that any confusion about his stance could be due to the Nigerian public’s “short memory.”
