The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the immediate withdrawal of Police Mobile Force (PMF) operatives attached to private individuals across Nigeria.

The directive, announced during a meeting with PMF squadron commanders at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, was confirmed in a statement issued by Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi.

Describing the PMF as the elite tactical unit of the police, Egbetokun stressed that the force must refocus the unit on its primary mandate, rapid response to riots, emergencies, and violent threats nationwide.

The IGP frowned at the practice of assigning PMF operatives to escort and guard duties for VIPs and private citizens, describing it as a distortion that undermines the operational capacity of the tactical unit.

As part of the reforms, Egbetokun unveiled new measures, including quarterly training on ethics and professionalism, and a mandatory standby arrangement where all squadrons must maintain fully equipped, combat-ready teams at all times.

“Commanders will henceforth be held accountable for the actions and discipline of their officers,” he warned, urging them to lead by example through regular inspections, proactive training, and strong mentorship.

Egbetokun explained that the move is part of broader reforms aimed at restoring discipline within the police, safeguarding human rights, and aligning Nigeria’s policing practices with global standards.

He commended President Bola Tinubu for his continued support for the force and also acknowledged the role of international partners in enhancing the technical capacity of the Nigeria Police.

The IGP called on PMF commanders nationwide to embrace the reforms as both a professional and moral responsibility to reposition the force for better security delivery.
