JUST-IN: Fire engulfs seven-storey building in Lagos Island
A fire broke out early Friday morning at a seven-storey building on Sanni Adewale Street in the Lagos Island Local Government Area, causing significant damage to several shops within the building.
The blaze, which began in the early hours, prompted a rapid response from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.
According to a statement by Margaret Adeseye, the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the distress call was received at 5:17 a.m., and firefighters from the Ebute Elefun, Sari, and Lekki 1 stations were promptly dispatched, arriving at the scene by 5:33 a.m.
“Thanks to the quick and coordinated efforts of the firefighters, the fire was brought under control, preventing further spread to neighboring structures. Ventilation efforts are currently underway to ensure the safety of all residents and workers in the vicinity,” Adeseye reported.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire may have been caused by an electrical surge. Despite the extensive damage to the shops within the building, there have been no reports of casualties.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service continues to monitor the area to prevent any potential rekindling of the flames. Further investigations will be conducted to ascertain the full extent of the damage and confirm the precise cause of the fire.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety measures, especially in densely populated urban areas like Lagos Island, where quick response times are crucial in minimizing damage and ensuring public safety.
