Katsina Govt spends N5.4 Billion on Goat rearing initiative for women

The Katsina State Government has allocated approximately N5.4 billion to support 3,610 women across the state’s 361 wards, providing each with four goats to enhance livestock farming and economic empowerment.

Governor Dikko Radda announced this at the official launch of the goat-rearing initiative in Dan-Nakolo, Daura Local Government Area, emphasizing its role in boosting agriculture, ensuring food security, and fostering self-sufficiency in the state.

He described the initiative as a strategic move to empower women farmers by providing resources, training, and support to help them successfully breed goats.

The government also plans to implement best practices in livestock breeding, multiplication, and genetic improvement to enhance productivity.

“We understand that livestock farming is not only an activity, it’s a means of livelihood for many families, a way of preserving our culture and also a source of food security for our communities.

“The initiative is designed to empower local farmers, especially women groups through the ministry of women affairs and the community level committee, by providing them with the resources, training and support needed to breed goats successfully.”

According to him, his administration is also committed to implementing best practices in livestock breeding, multiplication and genetic improvement.

He noted that by focusing on these key areas, his government aimed to enhance the quality of livestock, increase productivity and improve overall health and wellbeing of the goats.

“Moreover, we implement training programmes for our farmers, equipping them with skills necessary to engage in effective breeding practices.

“This programme will cover essential aspects such as animal nutrition, health management and sustainable farming technique.

“Our goal is to create a knowledgeable and skilled workforce that can drive the livestock sector forward, ensuring that we remain competitive and resilient in the face of challenges.

“In addition to improving health protection, this initiative will lead to the creation of economic diversification, whether by creating a platform for local markets to strive more to align with our ambition and economic self reliance,” he said.

Earlier, the Special Adviser to the governor on livestock, grasing and reserves, Yusuf Suleiman, said the distribution of goats to these groups was a testament to their commitment to fostering inclusive growth and reducing poverty.

“As we implement this initiative, we recognise the crucial role that women play in driving economic progress and improving livelihoods.

“By providing them with the resources and support they need, we are confident that they will thrive and become catalysts for positive change in their communities.”
