Lagos Assembly: Mojisola Meranda assumes office as lawmakers chants ‘You are the Speaker’
Mojisola Meranda has officially assumed office as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, marking the start of her tenure as the head of the legislative body.
During the ceremony, Meranda was accompanied by all members of the Assembly, except former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, whose absence was noted.
“Madam, continue your work; your work is appealing to us. You are the Speaker, you are the Speaker, you are the Speaker,” they chanted.
“Speak for Lagos. Continue with your work,” they added in unison. After receiving the accolades, the lawmakers followed Meranda to her official office, where intense prayers were offered as she settled into her new role.
This development comes days after former Speaker Obasa claimed that his removal was unconstitutional and did not follow due process.
Meanwhile, security has been strengthened around the Lagos State House of Assembly to ensure a smooth and peaceful plenary session.
A notice signed by Omotayo Adekemi on behalf of the Acting Clerk of the House, Mr. Taiwo Ottun, stated:
“Following management directives, all staff members and legislative aides must present valid identity cards to access the House premises. Entry will be denied to anyone without a valid ID card. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding.”
Additionally, the Lagos State Police Command has assured the public that it will maintain order throughout the state.
State Commissioner of Police, Ishola Olawale, said in an interview on Sunday: “While the police have no business inside the Assembly, it is our duty to ensure calmness outside the premises and across the state.”
