For the second time in 2025, Nigeria’s national power grid has collapsed, leaving homes and businesses in Lagos and other major cities without electricity.

According to the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company, the collapse occurred at exactly 11:34 a.m. on Wednesday, February 12, 2025.

In a statement, the company said: “Dear Esteemed Customer, Please be informed that we experienced a system outage today, 12th February 2025, at 11:34 hrs affecting all our feeders. Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders.”

The National Grid also confirmed the development on its official X page, stating: “There was a ‘GRID DISTURBANCE’ before noon today. Parts of the country experienced outages. Further information shortly.”

This marks the 14th national grid failure in the past 14 months, increasing frustration among Nigerians. Reports indicate that power generation dropped drastically from 2,111.01 megawatts to just 390.20 megawatts following the collapse.

The first grid collapse of the year occurred on January 11, causing a nationwide blackout, while a similar incident was recorded in November 2024.

At the time, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) attributed the failure to multiple line and generator trippings, which led to grid instability. TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, had explained that data from the National Control Centre (NCC) showed that some parts of the grid remained unaffected.
