LG Poll: Fubara reportedly directs loyalists to contest under APP
Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has announced that all 23 local government chairmen will contest the upcoming local government elections under the banner of the All People’s Party (APP).
This significant political shift comes after Governor Fubara lost control of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) structure in the state to former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
The local government elections, slated for October 5, 2024, are expected to see a major shake-up as Fubara distances himself from the PDP and aligns with the APP. The governor’s decision is seen as a strategic move to challenge Wike’s dominance, which has caused friction between the two leaders.
Wike continues to wield substantial influence over the PDP in Rivers State, forcing Governor Fubara to pivot towards the lesser-known APP.
With the backing of the governor and the incumbent local government chairmen, the APP is set to gain increased visibility and momentum in the upcoming elections, potentially shifting the political landscape in the state.
