Libya appeals CAF ruling awarding Nigeria points after disrupted AFCON Qualifier

The Libyan Football Federation has filed an appeal against the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) decision to award Nigeria three points and three goals after a disrupted Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier, initially scheduled for October 15 in Benina, Libya.

The CAF ruling, which also imposed a $50,000 fine on Libya, cited mishandling of the Nigerian team’s arrival, including poor conditions and a 20-hour ordeal.

Libyan media outlet alwasat.ly reported that Libya has hired Tunisian lawyer Ali Abbas to argue that the CAF decision was “unfair.”

The Nigerian Football Federation’s complaint spurred a CAF investigation, revealing multiple violations of tournament regulations and disciplinary codes, leading to Libya’s forfeiture of the match.

CAF’s decision, if upheld, will bolster Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2025 AFCON finals in Morocco, while Libya remains on the brink of elimination in Group D with only one point.
