Background

Francis Nwifuru is an indigene of Oferekpe Agbaja in Izzi local government area of Ebonyi State, he was birthed on February 25th, 1975.

His parents are Chief and Mrs Nwifuru Nwamkpu. In his early years, he occasionally helped his father with the animal care.

Francis commenced his elementary education at Oferekpe Agbaja Community Primary School in 1991.

In 1999, he moved on to Community Secondary School, Nwofe Agbaja.

He enrolled in Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki to study woodworking and building technology after completing his early education.

In June 2021, Nwifuru graduated from Salford University in Manchester, United Kingdom, with a master’s degree in procurement, logistics, and supply chain management.

Career

He ran for the Ebonyi State House of Assembly in 2007, but he was unsuccessful.

Later on, he was designated as the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Ex-Officio State Executive Member for Ebonyi State.

He ran for the Ebonyi State House of Assembly seat representing the Izzi West Constituency once more in March 2011.

He was appointed chairman of the House Committee on Lands, Survey, Urban Development, and Environment during that same term, and he also served as deputy chief whip.

He became the only member in the history of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly to be re-elected twice as Speaker after being elected as the Assembly’s fifth speaker in 2015 and 2019.

He joined the All Progressive Congress (APC) in 2020, and he was chosen to serve as the South East Conference of State Legislatures of Nigeria’s national vice-chairman.

In the 2023 Ebonyi gubernatorial election, he represented the All Progressives Congress and won with a total of 199,131 votes cast among the state’s 13 local governments.

He was then sworn in as the Governor of the State.

Personal life

Gov. Nwifuru was born into a polygamous household, he was baptized as a Catholic and christened with the name “Francis.”

Controversy

Nwifuru refuted allegations that he was detained by the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in March 2016, despite claims to the contrary.

Nwifuru clarified that he only accepted the EFCC’s invitation to visit its South-East zonal office in Enugu.
