In this article, News360 Nigeria outlines 10 African countries with the highest minimum wage in 2024.

The lowest amount of money that an employer is permitted to pay an employee for their services is the minimum wage.

Generally, governments set it up to discourage low pay and increase lower-paid workers’ incomes. The minimum wage differs according to the industry, country, region, and age group.

Africa has a very diverse range of minimum wage laws, each country determines its own minimum wage based on factors such as cost of living, labor market dynamics, and other factors.

Nigeria is absent from the list of ten countries with the highest national minimum wage in Africa which is why negotiations are ongoing about raising Nigeria’s minimum wage between the Federal Government and the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC).

The Federal Government wants to raise the minimum wage to N60,000 per month, which would be an almost 80% increase but organised labour has stated that it will not accept anything less than N100,000 ($68.09) as a minimum wage.

Following the elimination of fuel subsidies and the nation’s current economic hardship, organized trade unions said a new minimum wage was required.

Here’s a list of African countries with the highest minimum wages in 2024 and their naira equivalence.
