Mark Carney has officially been sworn in as Canada’s new prime minister during a ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.

As part of the ceremony, he pledged allegiance to King Charles III, along with his heirs and successors.

Following Carney’s swearing-in, ministers of his new cabinet are also taking their oaths of office. Speaking briefly to reporters upon his arrival, Carney emphasized his administration’s commitment to swift action, stating, “We’re going to get straight to work.”

His appointment follows the formal resignation of outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau earlier in the day. In his farewell remarks, Trudeau expressed gratitude to Canadians, saying, “Thank you for trusting me, for challenging me.”

Carney replaced Trudeau as the leader of the Liberal Party at the weekend, after being voted in by party members in a landslide victory

All eyes will now be on if Carney calls a snap federal election, which is currently scheduled for October.
