Meet John Azuta-Mbata, newly elected President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo
John Azuta-Mbata, a former Senator representing Rivers East at the National Assembly, has been elected as the 13th President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, a prominent Igbo socio-cultural organization.

Background
Born in January 3rd 1960 in Rivers State, Azuta-Mbata earned a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Ibadan.

Former Senator for Rivers East
John Azuta-Mbata served as the Senator representing Rivers East in the National Assembly during Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.
Elected in 1999 on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), he was re-elected in 2003, serving two consecutive terms until 2007.
As a senator, Azuta-Mbata served on several key Senate committees, including Defense, Works & Housing, Women Affairs, Finance & Appropriation (as Vice Chairman), Information, Special Projects, and Local & Foreign Debts.
He also contributed to the development of education and infrastructure in Rivers State as a member of the Governing Council of Rivers State University of Science and Technology.
Acquittal in corruption case
In 2005, Azuta-Mbata was implicated in an alleged N55 million budget bribe scandal but was acquitted by the Court of Appeal in 2010.
The court dismissed all charges, clearing his name after a lengthy legal battle, which reaffirmed his integrity in public service.
Leadership role in Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide
In January 2025, Azuta-Mbata was elected the 13th President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, succeeding Fidelis Chukwu.
