Edoardo Bove, Fiorentina’s midfielder, is conscious and recovering in Florence’s Careggi Hospital after collapsing during Sunday’s Serie A match against Inter Milan.

Fiorentina confirmed in a statement that Bove was “awakened and extubated” on Monday morning and is now “awake, alert, and oriented.”

The 21-year-old midfielder has communicated with his family, team management, coach, and teammates, who visited him immediately upon hearing the positive news.

Fiorentina assured fans that further medical tests will determine the cause of the incident.

Bove’s sudden fall occurred just 16 minutes into the match, leading to the game being suspended. Initial tests have ruled out significant damage to his central nervous and cardio-respiratory systems.

Fiorentina’s general manager, Alessandro Ferrari, stated that Bove encouraged his teammates to continue playing their scheduled Italian Cup match against Empoli on Wednesday.

However, Ferrari cautioned that it is too soon to speculate about Bove’s long-term career, citing Italy’s strict medical regulations for professional athletes.

The incident drew parallels to Christian Eriksen’s cardiac arrest at Euro 2020. Eriksen, after receiving an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), was barred from Italian football but resumed his career in the Premier League.

Fiorentina fans were reminded of the tragic passing of former captain Davide Astori in 2018, adding emotional weight to the situation.

Supporters remained in their seats long after the match was halted, hoping for encouraging updates.

Serie A officials are set to decide on a new date for the suspended match, with February being a likely option.
