Mokwa flood tragedy an ‘Act of God’ – Babangida

Former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has described the devastating flood incident in Mokwa, Niger State, as an act of God, saying it was beyond human control.
Babangida made this remark on Friday while receiving a Sallah homage from a delegation of the Niger State Government at his Hilltop residence in Minna.
The former leader, in his Eid-el-Kabir message, extended his heartfelt condolences to families who lost loved ones in the disaster, which has so far claimed nearly 200 lives, leaving many displaced.
“What happened in Mokwa is unfortunate, but it is ordained by Allah. It is beyond our powers, and this is why we should all continue to pray for the souls of the deceased,” Babangida said while addressing the visiting government officials.
The delegation, led by the Deputy Governor, Comrade Yakubu Garba, paid the traditional Sallah visit and sought the elder statesman’s prayers and guidance, especially in light of the recent tragedy that has thrown the state into mourning.
“We are aware that the General is disturbed by the recent incident in Mokwa.”
“All we need from all and sundry is prayers, and we will also appreciate your fatherly role at all times, especially at this trying period,” Garba stated.
He assured Babangida of Governor Umaru Bago’s determination to continue delivering on development promises despite the current challenges and thanked the former president for his continued concern and support for the state.
Babangida, while commending Governor Bago’s administration for its development efforts, urged the government to stay focused on its vision for the state and pledged his unwavering support.
The flood incident in Mokwa, which struck on May 28, 2025, has been described as one of the most tragic in recent years, claiming lives, destroying homes, and displacing hundreds.
