NAFDAC reopens Onitsha Market after crackdown on fake drugs

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced the reopening of the Onitsha Drug Market and other nearby markets nearly a month after they were shut down over illicit drug concerns.

The markets, which include those dealing in plumbing materials, timber, surgical supplies, and science laboratory materials, were closed following the discovery of fake and substandard drugs.

Speaking to market union leaders and government officials, NAFDAC’s South-East Zonal Director, Mr. Martins Iluyomade, explained that the closure was necessary due to the widespread presence of harmful drugs that posed serious public health risks.

He revealed that over 50 trailers of fake drugs had been seized, including narcotics and substandard medicines linked to insecurity in the region. He also raised concerns over poor storage conditions, which rendered many drugs ineffective and dangerous for consumption.

Although the market is set to reopen on Friday, about 4,000 shops will remain locked until their owners provide explanations regarding certain drugs found in their possession.

Market leaders have pledged to work with NAFDAC to identify traders still engaging in the illegal drug trade. The agency warned that any further violations could lead to another closure of the market.
