NCC flags Starlink over unapproved data tariff hike
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has called out satellite internet provider Starlink for an unauthorized hike in its data tariffs.
According to the NCC, the company raised its tariffs without securing the necessary approval from the regulatory body.
Dr. Reuben Muoka, the NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, issued a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, explaining that Starlink’s actions were in direct violation of Sections 108 and 111 of the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003, as well as its licence conditions.
The commission expressed concern over this breach, viewing it as a potential threat to regulatory stability within Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.
“We were surprised that the company jumped the gun by announcing price changes after filing a request to the Commission seeking approval for price adjustment for which the Commission was yet to communicate a decision.
“The Commission will, therefore, take appropriate enforcement measures against any action by a licensee that is capable of eroding the regulatory stability of the telecommunications industry,” he said
