NERC imposes N200,000 fine on customers who tamper with electricity meters

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has introduced strict penalties for customers who tamper with or bypass electricity meters, imposing a fine of N200,000 for maximum-demand customers on the first offence and N300,000 for repeat offenders.
According to a new order posted on its website, NERC also set fines for non-maximum demand residential customers at N100,000 for a first offence and N150,000 for subsequent violations. Additionally, the Commission directed electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to charge a reconnection fee of N10,000 for non-maximum demand customers and N50,000 for maximum-demand customers.
NERC further mandated that any DisCo that fails to reconnect a customer after payment must compensate them if the delay exceeds 48 hours.
The Commission emphasized that DisCos must take responsibility for compensating customers for delayed reconnections when disconnections were unjustified.
