Nigeria @64: Gov Alia grants pardon to six inmates
On Tuesday, Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State granted pardon to six inmates at the Maximum Correctional Centre in Makurdi.
The decision followed recommendations by the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, led by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice and Public Order, Mr. Fidelis Mnyim.
Represented by Mnyim, the governor emphasized that the pardoned inmates had demonstrated genuine remorse and good behavior, making them eligible for release under Section 212 of the Nigerian Constitution (as amended).
The inmates will receive skills training to aid their reintegration into society.
Governor Alia clarified that the pardons were based on merit, with recommendations from clergy and community members who had interacted with the inmates.
Benue State Comptroller of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Mary Oche, praised the governor for his compassion and urged the released inmates to embrace a new path in life.
Among those freed was Umar Dansabe, who had been sentenced to death 14 years ago for armed robbery.
Speaking to the press, Dansabe expressed gratitude and vowed to lead a life of good conduct.
