Nigeria plunged into darkness again as national grid collapses for the 8th time this year

Nigeria’s national power grid has collapsed once more, casting the nation into another widespread blackout.

This latest collapse comes after a troubling series of failures in October, despite government assurances of a long-term solution to these persistent issues.

At 2:35 p.m., reports confirmed a total power outage, with readings showing zero megawatts from all Power Generation Companies across the country. This marks the eighth grid failure in 2024, with three occurring in just one week. Earlier in October, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) attributed one failure to a fire at the Jebba transmission station, adding to the year’s staggering 105 recorded cases of grid collapse.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has cited outdated infrastructure as the root cause of these repeated failures. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) echoed these concerns, highlighting how frequent disruptions have rolled back recent progress in strengthening grid stability and closing the infrastructure gap.

As Nigerians await an explanation for the latest collapse, the ongoing power crisis continues to raise concerns about the nation’s energy reliability and resilience.
