The Nigerian Navy has successfully prevented oil thieves from exploiting an abandoned oil well at Oke-Agor-Isekun, an island near the Ogun and Ondo states boundary.

Navy Captain Solomon Ohunenese, the commander of the Naval Base in Epe, Lagos State, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday. He revealed that the operation was launched following credible intelligence received from the Ogun State Government regarding illegal activities at the site.

According to the statement, Oke-Agor-Isekun has become a hotspot for criminal activities, with oil thieves targeting the abandoned well for illicit crude extraction. The navy, in collaboration with Ogun State officials, conducted a joint operation to secure the site and prevent further exploitation.

“The theft of crude oil not only robs the government of vital revenue but also causes severe environmental degradation due to unregulated siphoning, leading to oil spills that endanger local communities and the ecosystem,” the statement noted.

Following the intervention, naval personnel have been deployed to the area, and the oil well has been cordoned off to prevent further illegal activities.
