As the October 1 nationwide peaceful protest approaches, one of its key organizers and 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has declared that the protest will proceed as planned.

Speaking with Vanguard on Monday, Sowore emphasized that the movement is aimed at defeating tyranny and oppression in Nigeria’s democratic system, not to engage in dialogue with Aso Rock.

Sowore stated that the protest, which will take place at Eagle Square in Abuja, is not about seeking an invitation to the Aso Rock Villa but is focused on achieving meaningful change. “We are only ready for change, not monologue,” he said.

The protest, scheduled for Nigeria’s Independence Day on October 1, is symbolic, as Sowore explained, highlighting the need to question the country’s independence from Britain in 1960 and to push for a new independence from “internal colonizers.”

Despite potential intimidation, Sowore remains resolute, stating, “It doesn’t matter to us, we expect the worst but we know the people would win ultimately.”
