NPFL: Rivers United back on top in title chase
Rivers United have reclaimed the top position in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) standings following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Kano Pillars.
Aniekeme Okon’s first-half strike secured all three points, propelling the Port Harcourt-based team to 29 points after 15 matches.
Meanwhile, their closest competitors, Remo Stars, slipped to second place after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Niger Tornadoes.
The loss leaves Remo Stars three points adrift of the new league leaders with 26 points.
Ikorodu City and Heartland FC continued their impressive campaigns, each recording significant home wins. Ikorodu City demolished Akwa United 4-1, climbing to third in the standings with 24 points.
Heartland FC edged out Nasarawa United 3-2 in a thrilling encounter, despite NPFL top scorer Anas Yusuf ending his four-match goal drought to equalize for Nasarawa United in the first half.
The result leaves Heartland FC on the rise as they aim to cement their position among the league’s frontrunners.
With the NPFL race heating up, Rivers United will look to maintain their momentum, while Remo Stars and other contenders aim to close the gap.
Heartland are now ninth on the table on 20 points.
Bayelsa United held El Kanemi Warriors to a goalless draw in Maiduguri, while Katsina United edged past Sunshine Stars 1-0 at home.
