Esther Ogechi Nworgu secured Nigeria’s second medal at the ongoing Paralympic Games, winning silver in the women’s up to 41kg para-powerlifting event.

Nworgu set two new Paralympic records with her final attempts, lifting 112kg and 118kg. However, China’s Zhe Cui claimed gold with a new record of 119kg.

Speaking on Wednesday, Nworgu described winning the silver medal in Paris as “like heaven,” particularly after dislocating her shoulder just two days prior. Despite her injury, which left her lifting the bar with essentially one arm, the 21-year-old narrowly missed out on gold by just one kilogram to defending champion Cui Zhe.

“I was so emotional because I never expected any medal from this competition.

“I had an injury two days ago and the doctors confirmed that I should not compete because it was critical.

“There is no adjective I can use to quantify my happiness right now.

“It is like heaven to me,” Nworgu said.

Nworgu’s resilience and determination made her achievement even more remarkable, showcasing the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
