A tragic incident unfolded at Obada Idi-Emi High School in Ogun State’s Imeko Afon Local Government Area, where a student identified as Ariyo reportedly died after receiving 162 strokes of the cane from a teacher.

The punishment followed an incident where Ariyo allegedly broke a dustbin, which the teacher had previously warned the students not to damage.

Activist Adetoun shared the story on Instagram, revealing that the incident began when Ariyo jokingly commented that the dustbin was bought with the students’ funds, a remark that reportedly angered the teacher. The teacher then took the matter to the principal, who allegedly ordered that Ariyo be disciplined.

In response, the teacher delivered the severe punishment of 162 lashes, causing Ariyo to collapse. Witnesses claimed the teacher and other staff delayed taking Ariyo to the hospital, and by the time they did, he had passed away.

A senior police official, speaking anonymously, confirmed the incident, noting that tensions in the area were high but had been controlled by police intervention. The event has sparked widespread condemnation, with calls for accountability and justice for the young student.

“We are on the matter, the incident wanted to create tension but we were able to douse the tension,” the police source said.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command was yet to respond to enquiries on the incident sent to her line as of the time of filing this report.
