One dead, four others missing as gunmen abduct sport journalists in Anambra
A group of sports journalists traveling to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to cover the Nigeria vs Libya African Cup of Nations qualifying match scheduled at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Friday, was kidnapped in the Isseke community of Ihiala Local Government Area, Anambra State.
The incident occurred on Wednesday when the journalists, numbering about 11, were traveling in a bus through Isseke. Reports on Thursday confirmed that nine of the journalists had been rescued, though one, identified as Kola, was found dead. Four victims remain in captivity.
The Anambra State police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and stated that six members of the group had been rescued.
Ikenga said, “Joint security forces have successfully rescued six members of the media crew who were abducted while travelling from Lagos to Uyo along the Isseke-Orlu Road in Ihiala.
“Meanwhile, operations are still ongoing for the possible rescue of the seventh crew member.
“Further developments shall be communicated.”
