A tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday at Otta-Ona Junction, opposite Mobil Filling Station in Ikorodu, Lagos State, when a two-storey building under construction collapsed, claiming one life and leaving nine others injured.

According to eyewitnesses, the building came down around 2:00 p.m., prompting a swift response from emergency authorities.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), alongside its Response Team and Pre-Hospital Care Unit, arrived at the scene shortly after receiving a distress call at 2:02 p.m.

Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, confirmed the incident, noting that three individuals were initially trapped under the rubble when officials arrived at 2:40 p.m. He explained that while nine adult males were successfully rescued and given immediate medical attention, one body was unfortunately recovered from the debris.

He said, “Upon activation of the State’s Emergency Response Plan, teams from Agbowa and Alausa swiftly mobilised. Search and rescue operations began immediately, with the area secured to prevent further casualties.”

Heavy-duty machinery, including an excavator, was deployed to assist in the operation.

Other agencies actively involved include the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA).

While rescue operations have since been concluded, investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the collapse.
