Panic as gas explosion hits Alake sports centre during Gateway games

Tension gripped the Alake Sports Complex in Ijeja, Abeokuta, one of the designated venues for the ongoing 2024 National Sports Festival in Ogun State, after a gas explosion occurred in the area.

Reports indicate that the blast happened when a gas delivery truck, supplying fuel to the complex’s power generator, suddenly caught fire.

The unexpected blaze sparked chaos, sending athletes and spectators fleeing in fear to avoid the spreading flames.

Fortunately, emergency response teams arrived swiftly and were able to bring the fire under control, averting what could have been a major disaster.

No confirmed casualties yet.

Events at the venue including handball, squash and badminton had resumed as of the time this story was filed.
