Pastor bags life imprison sentence for raping minor

The Nelspruit Sexual Offences Court in South Africa has sentenced 42-year-old pastor Dumisani Khumalo to life imprisonment for the rape of a 14-year-old girl in 2020.

The sentence, handed down on September 3, 2024, reflects the court’s commitment to addressing the serious nature of sexual offences against children.

According to a statement from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) DPP Mpumalanga Regional spokesperson, Monica Nyuswa, the assault had significant adverse effects on the victim.

These included a decline in her academic performance, fear of being alone, and a prior suicide attempt.

The incident took place on July 25, 2020, when Khumalo offered a lift to the victim and her friend in his vehicle.

After dropping off the friend at a shop, Khumalo drove past the store, made a U-turn, and parked at a playground, where he raped the victim. The victim managed to escape and reported the assault to a neighbor, leading to Khumalo’s arrest.

During the trial, Khumalo pleaded not guilty and attempted to discredit the victim, but State Prosecutor John Mahlwele presented compelling evidence, including victim and eyewitness testimonies and medical reports. These were found credible by the court.

The victim impact statement revealed the profound effects of the assault, including significant changes in her behavior and emotional state.

Magistrate Recardo Cloete noted Khumalo’s lack of remorse and stated that there were no justifiable reasons to deviate from the mandatory life sentence for such a serious crime.

In addition to the life sentence, Khumalo’s name will be added to the National Register of Sexual Offenders, barring him from working with children.

The NPA expressed satisfaction with the ruling, reaffirming its dedication to prosecuting gender-based violence and femicide cases.

“This case underscores the importance of protecting vulnerable individuals in our society and holding perpetrators accountable,” the NPA statement concluded.
