Sim Fubara was born on January 28th, 1975, in Opobo Town, Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area, Rivers State.
Prior to pursuing his studies in accounting at Rivers State University of Science and Technology, he attended Opobo Primary School and the Comprehensive Secondary School, Opobo.
He graduated from the University of Port Harcourt in 2013 with an MBA and in 2016 with an MSc.
In his pursuit of greater knowledge, he has taken part in a number of professional gatherings, seminars, workshops, and training courses, such as the National Training Workshops on Public Finance Management held by the Federal Government of Nigeria at the Federal Treasury Academy in Orozo, Abuja.
The training program on International Public Sector Accounting Standards and Financial Euromoney, organized by the Rivers State Ministry of Finance, and the training workshop on Development and Performance Measurement in the Rivers State Public Finance Sector, organized by the Rivers State Government and Transglobal Business Solution Limited.
Career
Sim was employed by the Rivers State Senior Secondary Schools Board in 2003 as a principal accountant.
In 2015, he was promoted to the role of director of finance and accounts at the government house of the State. In March 2020, he was appointed Permanent Secretary.
On December 23, 2020, he was named Rivers State’s accountant general.
He holds the distinction of being a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (FCTI), the Nigerian Institute of Management, and the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria.
Politics
He served as the people’s Democratic party’s leader in the Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area.
Under his direction, the Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area’s party grew stronger and more united.
After winning the People’s Democratic Party’s governorship primary in May 2022 for the general elections of 2023, he went on to win the Rivers State gubernatorial election in 2023 and was sworn in as the state’s new governor.
Private life
Sim Fubara is a Christian and is happily married to Mrs. Valerie Fubara and together they have three kids.
Joseph Fubara, his late father, was a retired military officer, while Mrs. Love Fubara, his late mother, worked as a civil servant.
He is the second child and first son out of five siblings.
He also supports and patronizes the Women Prayer Network in Opobo Town, which is devoted to pleading for the advancement and tranquility of the community and its residents.
Controversies
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission issued a wanted list for Fubara and 58 other government officials in May 2022, accusing them of stealing $435 billion.
Along with four other government officials from Rivers State, he was also wanted for a fraud worth $117 billion.
Fubara maintains his innocence in the face of additional charges brought by the EFCC, which include allegations of criminal conspiracy, money laundering, misappropriation of public funds, and abuse of office.
Funded projects
In his capacity as governor of Rivers State, Sim Fubara and Julius Berger signed a N195.3 billion contract for the building of the Port Harcourt Ring Road.
When finished, the project would pass through six of the state’s local government areas, relieving traffic in Port Harcourt.
The governor added that the project would receive an advance of more than 150 billion dollars from the state.
Honors
Sim Fubara holds the traditional chieftaincy title of Amaopu-Senibo of Opobo Kingdom.
As a reward for his contributions to the church and humanity, the Evo Diocese of the Anglican Communion awarded him the esteemed Knight of Saint Christopher (KSC) order of the Anglican Communion of Nigeria in 2020.
