Prolonged absence of President Paul Biya sparks speculation about health

Concerns are growing among Cameroonians as President Paul Biya, who has been noticeably absent from both domestic and international engagements, remains out of the public eye.

The 91-year-old president, who left Cameroon in early July for an official diplomatic mission, initially traveled to France and then China.

However, his absence at major events like the UN General Assembly and the La Francophonie summit in France has fueled rumors about his health.

Instead of attending these engagements, Biya reportedly opted for rest in Switzerland.

A source from the presidency has cited health concerns as the reason for the president’s prolonged absence.

While there is no formal restriction on the length of a president’s time abroad, public sentiment tends to expect a return within 40 days a threshold Biya has now exceeded, raising eyebrows.

Throughout his 42 years in power, Biya’s extended absences have often led to widespread speculation, including rumors of his death, which were later dispelled when he reappeared.

Now, amid discussions about his health, some political leaders are still calling for him to run in the 2025 presidential election.

This continued push for Biya’s candidacy reflects a deep-rooted tradition in Cameroon’s political landscape, even as concerns grow over the president’s ability to lead, given his advancing age and health.
