Reckless truck driver rams into Anambra checkpoint, kill 6
Six individuals lost their lives in a multi-vehicle crash at Eke Awgbu along the Agulu-Awgbu Road in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed on Tuesday.
Around 9:30 in the morning, a truck, a tricycle, and two motorcycles were involved in an accident, according to the State Sector Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria in Awka.
Mr. Irelewuyi cited brake failure and speeding as possible cause of the accident.
The crash involved a commercial truck belonging to BUA without a registration number, a commercial tricycle with registration number NZH84LG, a commercial motorcycle with registration number OLU245QV, and a private Honda motorcycle with no registration number.
“Eyewitnesses reported that the truck driver was speeding, experienced brake failure, lost control, and collided with other vehicles at a checkpoint, resulting in the crash,” Mr. Irelewuyi said.
The accident involved 11 people—nine male adults and two female adults. Five individuals sustained injuries, while six others were killed.
Before the FRSC rescue team arrived, injured victims were taken to the Referral Health Centre in Awgbu, and the deceased were taken to St. Joseph’s Mortuary, Adazi-Nnukwu.
The sector commander extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
He also urged motorists to adhere to safe speed limits, emphasizing, “Kill the speed now before it kills you.”
