Reps propose special intervention fund to combat oil theft
The House of Representatives Special Committee on Oil Theft and Losses has proposed establishing a dedicated intervention fund for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to enhance their operational effectiveness.
The Committee’s Chairman, Hon. Alhasan Ado Doguwa, highlighted the need for this support during a special session focused on combating crude oil theft across Nigeria.
Doguwa criticized the insufficient support for the NSCDC, emphasizing its essential role in safeguarding critical national assets and infrastructure. He assured that the NSCDC would be actively involved in addressing oil theft and loss issues.
The Special Committee on Oil Theft and Losses was inaugurated on October 30, 2023, by Speaker Hon. Tajudden Abbas, in accordance with Section 62 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Constitution. Doguwa urged security agencies present to voice their challenges to help the Committee make informed decisions.
The Commandant General of the NSCDC, represented by Deputy Commandant General Philip Ayuba, reported difficulties accessing special intervention funds and criticized the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) for not allowing effective operation. He also expressed frustration with the lack of inclusion of the NSCDC in crucial funding initiatives.
Similarly, the Assistant Comptroller of Customs, Oloyede Adekunle, noted that the NCS has not received adequate support from relevant agencies to perform its duties effectively.
