Rivers Govt launches probe into killings, destruction of properties at LG headquarters
The Rivers Government has set up a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the acts of arson, killings, and extensive destruction of property that took place at several Local Government Council headquarters in Rivers State on or around Monday, October 7, 2024.
The incidents, which resulted in the torching of council secretariats and the loss of lives, have raised serious concerns about political instability and violence in the region.
This commission will seek to uncover the causes of the violence, identify those responsible, and recommend measures to prevent future occurrences.
The inquiry is expected to call witnesses, examine evidence, and provide a comprehensive report that will guide appropriate legal and governmental actions.

GOVERNMENT SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
JUDICIAL COMMISSION OF INQUIRY INTO THE ARSON, KILLINGS, AND WANTON DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY AT SOME LOCAL GOVERNMENT COUNCIL HEADQUARTERS WHICH OCCURRED ON OR ABOUT MONDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2024
Pursuant to Section 2(1) of the Commissions of Inquiry Law, Cap 30, Laws of Rivers State of Nigeria, 1999, His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, Governor of Rivers State, has approved the Setting-up of a Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the arson, killings, and wanton destruction of property at some Local Government Council Headquarters which occurred on or about Monday, October 7, 2024.

Members of the Commission will be sworn-in today, Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at the Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Port Harcourt at 4 p.m.
They are to be seated by 3.30 p.m.
