A Russian missile strike on the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv overnight has claimed the life of one woman and left 16 others injured, according to Ukrainian authorities.

First responders shared images showing multiple buildings engulfed in flames, with firefighters actively working to contain the blaze.

Mykolaiv, a city near the Black Sea with a pre-war population of nearly half a million, has been under renewed assault by Russian forces, despite Ukrainian forces having pushed them back in the autumn of 2022. In recent weeks, Russian aerial attacks have intensified in this region, also targeting the nearby port city of Odesa, causing significant damage to civilian vessels and port facilities.

In addition, the Ukrainian air force reported downing 12 out of 17 Iranian-designed attack drones deployed by Russia overnight, including several over the Mykolaiv region.

This escalation underscores the ongoing conflict between the two nations as the war, which began in February 2022, continues with no signs of abating.
