Liverpool extended their flawless UEFA Champions League run with a narrow 1-0 victory over Girona at the Montilivi Stadium on Tuesday.

Mohamed Salah’s second-half penalty proved decisive as the English giants maintained their spot as group phase leaders.

Under coach Arne Slot, Liverpool have now won all six of their group-stage matches, virtually ensuring their progression to the last 16 and sitting five points clear of second-placed Inter Milan. Meanwhile, Girona, making their Champions League debut, suffered their fifth defeat and face near-certain elimination.

A Night of Resilience for Girona

Girona, though outclassed on paper, held their own against the six-time European champions. The Spanish side, led by coach Michel Sanchez, put Liverpool under considerable pressure, forcing an exceptional performance from returning goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Alisson, back after a two-month injury layoff, made crucial saves, denying attempts from Alejandro Frances, Bryan Gil, and Miguel Gutierrez. Despite their efforts, Girona’s lack of finishing touch left them frustrated.

Slot praised his goalkeeper:
“Alisson has been so important for this club for so many years, and showed today he is one of the best—if not the best—goalkeeper in the world.”

Salah’s Decisive Moment

The turning point came in the 70th minute when Luis Diaz won a controversial penalty after being brought down by Donny van de Beek. After a VAR review, the referee pointed to the spot, much to Girona’s dismay. Salah converted calmly, sending goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga the wrong way and scoring his 50th Champions League goal.

This milestone places Salah among the competition’s all-time top scorers, tying with Filippo Inzaghi in 10th place. Despite his contract nearing its end, Salah’s 16 goals this season have been pivotal in Liverpool’s success.

A Grueling Encounter

Girona showcased the qualities that saw them push Real Madrid close in the Spanish league last season. Arnaut Danjuma and Bryan Gil led the attack, creating chances that tested Liverpool’s defense. However, their efforts weren’t enough to overturn Liverpool’s relentless dominance.

Coach Arne Slot admitted his dissatisfaction with Liverpool’s performance despite the win:
“If you ask me about all six games, I’m really pleased with all the results… (but) I’m far from pleased about the performance tonight.”

Girona coach Michel Sanchez, despite the loss, expressed pride in his team’s effort:
“I’m very proud of the players’ performance. It was a very worthy game from us, the commitment from the team was top level.”

Looking Ahead

With the group stage nearing its conclusion, Liverpool’s dominance leaves them as one of the favorites to contend for the title. Girona, on the other hand, will look to salvage some pride in their remaining fixtures, as their Champions League debut campaign winds down.
