Sea pirates abduct 10 boat travellers in Rivers

Suspected sea pirates have abducted 10 people on the Bonny-Port Harcourt waterway in Rivers State.

The incident occurred on Monday morning when the victims were traveling from Bonny Island to Port Harcourt.

According to reports, the gunmen intercepted the boat and forcibly took the 10 passengers captive.

The attack has raised concerns over the safety of travelers along the busy waterway, known for its strategic importance in the region.

Israel Waribo Pepple, the District Chairman of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Rivers State District, confirmed the incident.

He stated that the kidnapping occurred as the boat was making its way to Port Harcourt, highlighting the increasing threat posed by sea pirates in the area.

The Rivers State Police Command has acknowledged the report of the kidnapping and has launched an investigation into the incident.

Superintendent of Police and Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed that the Officer in Charge of Marine Operations, along with other top security officials, has been assigned to handle the situation.

Iringe-Koko assured the public that the Police are working diligently to secure the safe release of the kidnapped victims.

Efforts are also being made to track down and apprehend the perpetrators of this heinous crime.

The abduction has sparked renewed calls for enhanced security measures along the waterways, as the safety of commuters and maritime workers remains a pressing concern.

The Police have urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with the authorities as investigations continue.
